This article lists 25 Shunt Reactor MCQs for engineering students. All the Shunt Reactor  Questions & Answers below include a hint and a link to the relevant topic wherever possible. This is helpful for users who are preparing for their exams, interviews, or professionals who would like to brush up on the fundamentals of the Shunt Reactor.

High-voltage power systems of transmission must survive variations in load and stabilize their voltages. Two cases can be possible with these reactors one it can be fixed permanently to the line of transmission and the other it can be disconnected or connected to the line based on the load.

When we connect a three-phase reactor connected to 400 kV or else above the bus electrical system it compensates the reactive power of the system. Moreover, it controls the dynamic voltages occurred in systems due to rejections in the load. To maintain the impedances of reactors fixed shunt reactors must be gapped cored ones or magnetically-shield air cored ones.

Impedance values are maintained at constant to avoid harmonic currents in the reactors generated due to systems overvoltages. Shunt reactors are mainly suffered due to the losses in the core as it is operated in normal conditions. Preventive care must be taken to minimize the losses caused in the core at the time of design.

Both power transformers & shunt reactors are similar. Each phase has a winding when compared to power transformers. To enhance the efficiency of power & energy systems by absorbing & compensating the reactive powers in the cables & long higher voltage lines of transmission these reactors are utilized.
