This is helpful for users who are preparing for their exams, interviews, or professionals who would like to brush up on the fundamentals of Rectifier.

Electronic circuits to perform operations require DC voltages. The conversion of voltages from AC to DC is possible by placing a diode with a PN junction. The most prominent function of a diode is to rectify the Ac into Dc and the process is referred to as Rectification.

The electric current in diodes moves in a single direction i.e., when it is forward biased and the current during reverse mode will be blocked. It is the property that allows the diode to behave as Rectifier. These devices can shape like Mercury-arc valves, Solid-state diodes, and so on.

Mainly these rectifiers are categorized as Uncontrolled and Controlled Rectifiers. If the applied voltages are not be able to control are referred to as Uncontrolled rectifiers. If the voltage applied is controlled it is referred to as a Controlled rectifier. Further, these rectifiers are classified based on cycles used for conversion and are referred to as Half and Full Wave rectifiers.

The half cycle of AC is converted into DC in Half Wave rectifier whereas the full cycle i.e., both positive and the negative halves of the cycle are converted to DC in Full Wave Rectifiers. SCRs, IGBTs, and the MOSFETs are utilized for converting uncontrolled to controlled rectifiers. The wheat stone bridge is the perfect example of full wave rectification.
