FET stands for Field Effect Transistor, came in practicality by the scientist Julius Edgar in 1925. It is a semiconducting device designed with three main terminals. These terminals include the source (input), gate, and drain (output). The main purpose of the design of FET is to control the voltage range between input and output terminals.

FET is called a unipolar type transistor; as it is designed with either of majority charge carriers as holes or electrons hence it. It operates depending on the voltage applied on the gate terminal in three regions namely active, non-linear, and saturation region. The charge carriers in FET flow from input to output terminal depending on the amount of voltage applied to the gate terminal. They are mainly classified as JFET and MOSFET.

JFET is abbreviated as Junction FET, is a switch that operates on supplying gate terminal with reverse bias-based voltage, allowing charge to flow from source to drain. JFET is further classified as N-channel JFET and P-Channel JFET, where N-channel JFET is doped with P-type and P-channel JFET is doped with N-type impurities.

The major difference between 2 JFETs is, p-channel JFET has very small transconductance, and an N-channel JFET has low noise at its input. Whereas a MOSFET is a p or an n-type metal oxide type transistor containing an insulating type layer that provides high based input type impedance. They are further classified depending on the region of operation as enhancement type mode MOSFET and depletion mode type MOSFET. CMOS is an advanced version of MOSFET.

FET’s are further available in many classes based on the insulation method used and their specific application purpose such as DGMOSFET, IGBT, BioFET, FREDFET, etc. The advantage of FET is, it consumes less power, BJT has low power, and gate-to-drain current is high. FET’s are used in vast fields of applications from memory chips to electric motors.
